World Rally Championship (WRC)

Definition and Historical Status
The World Rally Championship (WRC) is the premier global rallying series organised by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), with its inaugural season held in 1973. Alongside the Formula 1 World Championship (F1) and the World Endurance Championship (WEC), it stands as one of the world’s top three motorsport spectacles. The defining hallmark of the WRC is that it does not take place on purpose-built circuits, but on real public and unpaved roads provided by host nations. Covering diverse driving surfaces such as snow and ice, gravel, mud, desert sand, and twisty mountain passes, it truly lives up to the ethos that "wherever there is a road, the WRC can race".

Competition Format and Regulations
Each WRC round runs over three days with a total distance of up to 1,500 km, comprising 15 to 25 timed special stages. Cars are flagged off individually at five-minute intervals to tackle all timed stages sequentially, with the crew recording the shortest aggregate time taking the overall rally win. Under the scoring system, the top ten finishers in the main classification score 25, 17, 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, and 1 point(s) respectively. Furthermore, the championship features two bonus point opportunities—"Super Sunday" and the "Power Stage"—where the top five fastest drivers in each segment are awarded an additional 5 to 1 point(s). At the end of the season, the driver with the highest points tally is crowned Drivers' World Champion, while the top-scoring marque clinches the Manufacturers' World Championship.

Technical Specifications and Categories
WRC machinery must be built and homologated from showroom road cars, with the donor vehicle requiring a minimum production run of over 2,500 units annually. In 2022, the WRC introduced hybrid powertrain regulations for the top-tier Rally1 class. However, from 2025 onwards, Rally1 cars reverted to pure internal combustion engine (ICE) power, running 1.6-litre turbocharged engines fuelled by 100% sustainable fuels. The minimum vehicle weight has been lowered from 1,260 kg to 1,180 kg, while the turbo air restrictor has been reduced from 36 mm to 35 mm to maintain a well-balanced power-to-weight ratio. Each crew consists of a driver and a co-driver, with the co-driver reading pace notes to deliver real-time road and terrain calls to the driver throughout the stages.

2026 Season Calendar
The 2026 WRC calendar spans 14 rounds across four continents. The season kicks off with Rallye Monte-Carlo (22 to 25 January), followed in sequence by Rally Sweden (12 to 15 February), Safari Rally Kenya (12 to 15 March), Croatia Rally (9 to 12 April), Rally Islas Canarias (23 to 26 April), Rally de Portugal (7 to 10 May), Rally Japan (28 to 31 May), Acropolis Rally Greece (25 to 28 June), Rally Estonia (16 to 19 July), Rally Finland (30 July to 2 August), Rally Paraguay (27 to 30 August), Rally Chile (10 to 13 September), Rally Italia (1 to 4 October), and the season finale at Saudi Arabia Rally (11 to 14 November).

Competitive Landscape and Historical Records
Following the conclusion of Rally Paraguay in the 2026 season, Toyota driver Evans leads the Drivers' Championship standings with 216 points, closely shadowed by Pajari with 196 points, and Solberg in third on 175 points. In the Manufacturers' standings, Toyota commands a massive lead with 554 points against Hyundai’s 381 points; a strong showing in Chile could see Toyota secure its tenth Manufacturers' title early, equalling the all-time record held by Lancia. In the history books, Sébastien Loeb clinched nine consecutive Drivers' World Championships (2004 to 2012), cementing his status as the most dominant driver in WRC history. Meanwhile, with 46 rally victories and 6 Manufacturers' titles, the Lancia Delta HF remains one of the most successful rally cars in the history of the sport.
